Tsunami Experience

We flew into Kaua’i yesterday on a little 33 passenger prop plane from Island Air. It is was a quick uneventful one hour flight. Picked up our Jeep from Alamo and were off to check out this new island. Our condo is on the north shore in a community called Princeville. The condo itself is Puu Poa and it is beautiful. The view from the living room area.

It is a wonderful place to contemplate life.

Had a bit of excitement last night when the Emergency Broadcast System cut into the radio broadcast and advised us of a tsunami warning due to an earthquake off the west coast of Canada. The telephone then rang and an automated message was delivered that way as well. We could hear sirens sounding from planes and helicopters that we’re flying around the coast. It was very impressive to watch the Civil Defense roll into action and start evacuating over 100,000 people from coastal areas of the different islands with only 6 hours warning. Even though we are right on the coast we were high enough that we did not have to move. From the perspective of a tourist who just landed on this island I was very impressed with the organization and response to this potential event. In the end there was hardly a ripple, but a cool incident none the less.

Went for a run this morning and spent the balance of the morning relaxing and readings on the deck.
