Our BC Winter

Currently, Karen and I are looking after a lovely pup in Kelowna, British Columbia. It may not be the most adventurous destination, but it holds some definite advantages. The biggest one for me is reminding me that a winter in BC can be quite nice. We spent the month of February on Vancouver Island and honestly, it is a bit depressing there during that month. No matter the lovely cat we were looking after, the great trails and paths to walk, and a great pub we found, it is still quite a dreary place to be at that time of year. Having said that we did still enjoy ourselves and saw some wonderful wildlife.

Admittedly having access to free eggs in Sooke was a wonderful perk, and the generosity of the home owners made our stay as comfortable as we could hope for. Looking after chickens always has its entertaining moments and we did enjoy our fair share of them.
In addition to our chickens, we had Red-tailed hawks in our yard.
As well as Bald Eagles.
The other highlight from our time in Sooke was the numerous hummingbirds that visited our feeder. I could be still and watch these cool creatures for hours.
One of the walks we enjoyed was on a little peninsula called Whiffin Spit. During one of our drizzly walks out there we noticed a seal laying still in about a metre of water. I found this quite odd and a bit disturbing, however after walking another 10 minutes Karen spotted the dorsal fin of an Orca in the inner harbour. Turns out the seal was practicing some valuable survival skills of staying out of sight of its primary predator.
We were fortunate to have one day when we went out to the Spit and the sun shone for us. Truly, there is something wonderful about being near water, especially when the sun shines.
We were also fortunate enough to have the Galloping Goose Regional Trail immediately behind our house. Due to the snow we were receiving we found the local artists liked to leave these miniature showmen along the railings of the trails bridges.

After our month on Vancouver Island we headed to our current house sit in Kelowna, BC. Though it can be just as cool as our month on the island, due to the higher elevation, the sun is shining significantly more for us.

We are just a short walk from Okanagan Lake here in Kelowna and the weather is being quite kind to us.
We are looking after a delightful little pup who is enjoying her daily extended walks as we explore the area. And there are a wonderful choice of areas to explore within walking distance of our house.
Coming across areas bursting with spring flowers is simply just good for the heart.
As the weather warms enough for us to enjoy the patio I think we will be able to truly enjoy our next month here before we head off on our next adventure.
