Enjoying Northern Ontario

This is a house sit for which I had high hopes and ended up having all expectations absolutely blown away. Within days of arriving I could just feel any stress I had simply sliding away.

The act of going out on the dock around sunset and enjoying the unique light show each day gave us was surreal.

The township we were located in is called Magnetawan, and whenever someone had asked where we were heading, we inevitably got a confused look as this is not a place it seems many people have heard of.

However when we went into town it was obvious that the residents are intensely proud of their thriving town.
The first weekend we were there they were holding the yearly Fall Festival. We arrived just in time to catch the parade and see one of the clans showing off their wares. It was great fun checking out the gardening and baking competition winners as well as the market.
Did I mention the different light show we enjoy every day?
We did manage to pull ourselves away from the property a couple of times and explore a bit of the region. The Town of Huntsville was a great location with nice areas to take the dogs for a stroll.

We also checked out a local attraction called The Screaming Heads. One of Karen’s old co-workers suggested we check it out, and it was interesting. We were lucky we went on the day we did, as the sign at the entrance indicated it was closed to the public that weekend. When we mentioned this to a local fellow he laughed and described something akin to a small version of Burning Man that was happening on the weekend. Lots of people camped out enjoying music, massive fires, and exploring their individualism.

Once you walk around the property you get where the name of it originates. There are large concrete screaming heads everywhere.
The 310 acre property is scattered with more than a hundred giant heads and other artistic structures. The first heads were made in 1995.
This creation behind Karen is called Crash. Apparently during the festival it becomes one of the stages.
This pyramid is another one of the permanent structures that is a stage during the festival. It looks like it would be a heck of an event to attend. Not quite sure it is our genre though.
More our speed was taking the kayaks out onto the bay to get a different perspective of the area.

Since we were here for a month we did have to find things to entertain ourselves. We had noticed a todo list on the fridge that had something about cleaning up the old dock. We enquired with the home owners and ended up getting some exercise and having an opportunity to play with a chainsaw while we removed an old dock and deck from the property.

A good friend provided a trailer for us to fill up and once we were done he hauled it away. The sense of community is a wonderful thing witness.
Let me tell you, if you ever have to disassemble a lot of securely attached planks this tool is a must. I was able to disassemble this deck in about 20 minutes. It absolutely satisfies that deep seated desire to rip things apart.
Of course each day of “work” required a session overlooking the bay.
We had to wait until the last 10 days of our stay to be rewarded with the gradual invasion of the autumn colours, but it was worth the wait.
We also had the opportunity to see quite a variety of caterpillars.
The sunrise offered a different focus due to the fog rising off the water each morning. What a great way to start each day.

The calming effect of sitting out on that dock each afternoon and enjoying the sense of peace and beauty has rejuvenated me more than I ever thought possible. It is great when life provides you with just what you need.
