Thank You COVID

We are coming up to the final few weeks of our longest house sit ever and it has been a heck of a ride. When we talk with people about our house sitting lifestyle and how COVID has affected us the answer is, COVID has been good to us.

As with pretty well everyone else in the world, COVID has cancelled, changed, altered, or just destroyed all plans we thought we had in mind. However it also provided us with circumstances that allowed us to maximize opportunities that were presented to us.

If you have read any of my previous posts it does not take long to figure out that I like photographing wildlife. Being placed in a beautiful home in a wonderful location for the last 18 months has forced me to see my home town through new eyes and appreciate what is, and has been all around me.

We were fortunate enough to have three owlets born each spring we have been here and watching them grow has been amazing.

About 2 weeks after we were offered a one year extension of our house sit here I received some less desirable health news, but due to COVID and the extended house sit we were able to deal with that event in a comfortable location with excellent facilities and the support of family and friends. Once again, thank you COVID.

We spent some time exploring our home town and even managed to pop into the Calgary Zoo and see the new, for us, penguin display. Very cool.

This King Penguin was determined to be the top poser in the group.
We also got out for a paddle on Glenmore Reservoir with some friends. A fantastic day.

Without a doubt though, the best part of being at home has been reconnecting with family and friends. Yes, the pandemic cut into our planned get togethers and limited who we could see at times, however, compared to being on the other side of the globe, these challenges were manageable.

As restrictions eased up and people received their vaccinations it was great to be able to spend some time with friends.

In the end it is all in how you choose to respond to circumstances that dictates your own happiness and joy with life. I say take the high road, the view is so much better.

Welcome to our travel blog. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to say, "I'm out of here?" Well we did, and in 2013 we made it a reality. We sold or gave away all of our possessions other than what fit in our luggage and we set off on an endless adventure. Part of our goal is to share our experiences with others and hopefully provide some information, motivation, or just a moments escape. The general idea was to look for a place that would be ideal to settle down in. However in the meantime it is about experiencing life in different countries amongst different cultures and learning how to understand and appreciate each other. A large part of our time is spent housesitting which provides an excellent opportunity to experience more of the "normal" neighbourhoods as opposed to the tourist locales. Though we make sure to enjoy those as well. So through plenty of photographs and a running commentary come and share with us our life on the road.

Peter, I was glad for the opportunity to reconnect with you and Karen during your extended stay in Calgary. I’m also thankful for your influence on us to try out the house sitting lifestyle. I look forward to hearing about your adventures in PEI and wherever you end up when you drift across the pond.

  2. well.said Peter. We have still traveled but only in the US and very carefully. Your photographs are splendid.

  3. I have just reread this blog again and am so grateful for how things worked out. The last paragraph is a quote keeping. You are so right ♥️
