One of the things we knew from the beginning of our planning was that we were going to do a night of luxury camping, or “Glamping” while we were in Oman. We went with Desert Queen Camps and were not disappointed. It is a fairly basic setup, but gave us just the experience we were looking for.
We arrived at the base camp in the middle of the afternoon of our second day of our road trip. We transferred our luggage into a Toyota Land Cruiser and were driven 20 minutes into the sandy landscape. As it turned out once we arrived, we were the only guests at the camp. The two brothers that looked after us were great. They took care of all the cooking and hosting, then left us alone to enjoy the incredible peace and quiet. There are ten tents at the camp. They have carpeted floors and are quite comfortable. Each tent even has its own washroom. Admittedly, the water in the shower was a bit cool this time of year, but the proper sit down toilet was a welcome surprise. The interior of the tent was wonderful. No sand, though you could feel it shift under the carpet as you walked across it. At night it was so incredibly quiet. I loved it.We were able to relax and enjoy the view while enjoying some tea and dates.Normally this is supposed to be the socializing tent. It was a bit weird having the whole place to ourselves. The sunset was not overly spectacular, it was a bit overwhelming though. There certainly is something awe inspiring about the simple power of a desert landscape. After sunset and dinner we had a fire prepared for us and enjoyed some masala tea. The tea was fantastic by the way.I walked up to a high point to try and capture some sunrise photos. Once again, not spectacular colours, but quite humbling to witness. You also get an idea of the size of the camp.A great experience and one that anyone visiting here would be remiss not to try. There are camps much more primitive than ours and ones significantly more opulent. It comes down to budget and what you are looking to experience. We loved it
