The Procesión De Catrina

Our first exposure to the actual celebrations of the Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead was the Catrina Parade which occurs earlier in the week. It was quite something to observe. The estimate I found was that there are 15,000 people involved in the parade split between participants and volunteers.

There are a lot of photos in this post. Take your time and enjoy. Take the time to view a few photos full frame because the detail in the make-up is truly incredible.

The preparations and festivities start several hours before the parade. The candy floss from these vendors was floating through the air all afternoon and evening.
I even managed to have a large piece land on me. Wasn’t quite sure what was on my head initially.

The parade was made up of all kinds of groups of an incredible variety of interests, but they all were impressively made up in the traditional Dia de Muertos make-up.

It started with elaborately decorated motorcycles and then transitioned to cars.

There were different clubs including this one demonstrating their martial arts.
No matter what the events and festivities there were always reminders of the reason for the Day of the Dead. Remembering family and friends who have passed away and celebrating their memory.

For me the most impressive part is the outfits of the individuals walking the parade route.

Also some great work done with balloons.

Even the local gangbangers brought their best bikes out.

The marching bands put on a great performance.

The procession never seemed to end.

There was even a section devoted purely to pets.

But in the end, for me, it was the individuals. Breathtaking design and skill in the costumes and the make-up.

Starting them young.
Even the farmers were represented.
There were several dance clubs performing.

I hope you enjoyed the views of the Catrina Parade. I appreciate you sticking to it to the end.
