As we were out walking the dogs this morning Karen commented that by the time we head to Mexico at the end of November we will have been on a 7 month solid run of house sitting. This has consisted of 7 sits in 3 countries, with 3 of the sits being repeats with home owners we have sat for previously. We certainly will have earned our holiday by the time we board that plane south.

The view off of our deck as I type this post certainly reveals that this rigorous schedule of house sitting really isn’t that trying.

The increase in our time we have to spend in Canada has presented us with an outstanding opportunity to explore areas of this country that we have never been before. The challenge for us is that we have come to the conclusion that we prefer warmer areas. In Canada, during the winter, this is a problem. So, when scheduling forces us to be in Canada during the winter months you may notice we seem to have an inclination to explore British Colombia. For those of you not familiar with Canadian weather, due to the proximity of mountains and oceans, BC enjoys significantly warmer winters than the rest of the country. Of course this comes with the downside of excessive dampness. One simply has to pick which winter issues one wants to endure.

Autumn in the Okanagan is a wonderful choice.
Even when the clouds descend and the moisture rolls in, the walks continue to be a magical experience.
After the Okanagan we headed to our current sit on Vancouver Island. On the east coast of of the Island we are faced with incredible beauty as winter comes upon us. Whether it is morning sunrise or mid afternoon introspection from the beach chairs the sights are wonderful.

As part of our house sitting and travel lifestyle we are members of various online groups whose interests intersect ours. It was interesting in the last month as we were part of a group Zoom chat with several other international house sitters and we were chatting and sharing how things were going. The subject came up of what the future holds and what directions we were all considering. Unsurprisingly several couples commented on wanting to pause and reevaluate what their futures were going to look like. This consequently caused Karen and I to delve a bit into that line of thinking once we were finished the call. The results of our chat simply reinforced why we have been so successful in the last 11 years. We looked at each other and pretty well simultaneously said that we were very happy to stay the course and carry on with our current lifestyle. Which is good as we are pretty well booked solid with travel for at least the next year.

Of course in the mean time we will continue to enjoy what each day brings. Like this buck wandering through our yard having a snack on the autumn foliage.
Part of our responsibilities here is to walk the dogs every day. I must say that this area is rich in choices for different walks in the forests, and the forests are some of the most beautiful in the world. This creek is part of a salmon hatchery project which makes it an absolute joy to explore. The ferns, moss, and trees are wonderful, but when you combine it with creeks teeming with large Coho Salmon swimming about it really is quite magical.
We had the good fortune to meet up with a couple we first met on a walking tour in Bath, England. How cool is it to spend the day with people from your own home town who you first met overseas and get reacquainted with on Vancouver Island. I love our life!
We were thrilled when the home owners of our current sit commented to us that seeing as our youngest son and his wife were living just across the water in North Vancouver that it would be a great idea to invite them for a visit. It had been over a year since we had seen each other in person so it truly was a wonderful weekend spending time with them.
Being able to share a bit of the beauty and adventure with those you love really enhances the experience.
As we were dropping Steven and Mary off at the ferry terminal, Mary suggested we try a nanaimo bar while we were in Nanaimo. Great idea! Delicious and a little bit of history. The first mention of nanaimo bars apparently is in a 1952 Woman’s Auxiliary Nanaimo Hospital Cookbook. Oh the sacrifices we make to explore.

With just a couple of weeks left in our time here on Vancouver Island we are now very excited to start thinking about our holiday in Mexico. In addition to visiting with friends we are super excited to be spending the first Christmas in 5 years with both our boys while we are in Mexico.

Stay tuned for an update from Puerto Morelos, Mexico.

  1. We are reading your post while on a sit up a mountain on Salt Spring Island, as we ogle our view of the islands, Active Pass, and the Lower Mainland. So many parallels, including the need to spend more time in Canada, and the choices we make to do that on our own terms. I love that you have the Zoom group to talk these things through and hear how others are deciding their futures. Like you, we also can’t see ourselves stopping this nomadic life and have zero clarity on where we would stop even if we wanted to. Also like you, we’re escaping to Mexico, but only for the early part of December, before we return to Vancouver for Christmas and then move on to a long sit on Gabriola Island for the rest of winter. We’re still having adventures in our own way, as are you. We’ll try not to be too envious when you write about Christmas in the warmth of Mexico and the company of your family. 🙂

    1. Enjoy your winter plans! They sound wonderful.
