Introduction to Mexico

We have been to Mexico a couple of times previously, however the last trip was for a wedding 20 years ago and previous to that was a surprise birthday trip for my 40th birthday. The key part was both trips involved staying at an all inclusive resort. Don’t get me wrong, we had an absolute blast on both trips and I understand the attraction, however, in no way is that “experiencing Mexico”, in my humble opinion. So for this trip we chose to rent a place just outside Puerto Morelos and see what we could learn. Yes we know that Mexico has a plethora of choices when it comes to towns to visit, but you have to start somewhere.

Of course we are still taking in the local tourist sights and enjoying the towns. We are currently staying in Puerto Morelos and are loving the local vibe.
December 1st was Karen’s birthday and she had indicated that she would like to have a birthday month in a warm place and still be able to enjoy friends and family. This was her birthday breakfast in Puerto Morelos. And yes, she wore that tiara the entire day.

The reason we went with the idea of renting a place in Puerto Morelos was that we wanted to give friends and family an opportunity to share part of this adventure with us. House sitting by definition does not lend itself to having guests, so renting it was.

For the first round we had my sister, Jenn, and our friend, Jane, spend a week with us. My face still hurts from laughing so much. It was wonderful to share this special time with such good company. I am still working on perfecting my margarita recipe, but the key is to keep trying.

Of course the downside of not being at a resort is when the fridge stops working, the ice maker goes on strike and the microwave dies, we are the ones who have to find solutions. Fortunately the owner of the B&B is very responsive and as helpful as possible. We have things up and running now.

We have had a blast checking out the local bars and restaurants in Puerto Morelos. The bar chairs at El Refugio were a big hit.
As always, I couldn’t resist the chance to record some of the disturbing lack of personal protection with workers. This guy was very skilled with the chainsaw but…what? What did you say? Hearing and eye protection is not a bad thing apparently.
Despite some cloudy days we managed to have a great time during our first week in Mexico.

Of course as we were near water we had to check out the diving. We did some research and ended up deciding to give the scuba shop, Elite Divers International, a try. We have not been disappointed.

Our first day of diving was open water so the Dive Master could assess our competency before heading for the cenotes. It also gave me a chance to try out my new underwater camera. Thanks for the suggestion Ian, it works like a charm.

Our next two days of diving were at cenotes. Technically what we are doing is cavern diving and what I can say is, it is a bit mind blowing at times. I have no pictures of the diving in the cenotes as camera use is restricted and honestly I wanted to make sure I focused on my buoyancy and control so as not to bump into the ceiling or stalagmites and stalagmites all around us.

Karen getting all set up. The entrance to this cenote, Little Brother was just 5 metres behind her.
This is the entrance to the Kukulcan Cenote. It is like entering another world.

If you are curious to see a bit more about what the cenotes look like I have attached a link to a YouTube video where she does a pretty good job of running through 2 of the cenotes that we did as well. If you have ever been in a cave and thought that was cool, just imagine flying through the middle of that cave and you get a tiny idea of what it can be like.

We have had some rainy days since we arrived, but that has been balanced out with some gorgeous sunny days as well.
The pool in our development where we are staying was quite quiet. Fortunately we had some more friends come and help keep it busy.
As much as we enjoy our travelling lifestyle, it is truly wonderful to share it with friends.
As well, it makes the dinners in restaurants significantly more entertaining.

As we come up on the end of our third week here in Mexico I have to say we are quite enjoying ourselves. We have already determined small towns are the way to go for us. We are looking forward to some more cenote diving later this week and then having more of our family visit with us next week.

We loved Puerto Morales. If you get a chance go visit Chichen Itza. It’s a 2 1/2 hour drive well worth it
